Question linkWhat is the SoCalGas® Smart Therm program?

SoCalGas Smart Therm program is designed to reward you for reducing your energy use during peak periods of natural gas demand.

Question linkHow does the SoCalGas Smart Therm program work?
  • Participants agree to allow us to lower their thermostat by a few degrees during Smart Therm events, which occur during peak hours, when demand for natural gas is very high, between December 1 and April 1. There will never be more than 25 Smart Therm events per winter season and each will last up to four hours.
  • For enrolling, participants will receive a one-time $50 check after initial enrollment and acceptance into the program.
  • Participants will automatically receive a $25 participation check annually for staying enrolled in the program.
  • Participants who enroll during the Smart Therm event season but before March 1 (December 1 through April 1) will receive the first participation check in the current season. Those who enroll after the event season (April 2 through November 29) will receive the first participation check during the next winter season in April or May. Thereafter, participants will receive the participation checks annually in April or May, as long as the program is available.
Question linkHow will I know if I am eligible to enroll?

To be eligible to enroll, you must meet the following qualifications: * You are a current SoCalGas residential customer. * You have an installed, eligible internet-connected thermostat. * You use your thermostat to control your natural gas furnace. * You must not be enrolled in the SoCalGas Advanced Meter Opt-Out Program.

You will receive a $50 check after being accepted into the program.

Question linkHow do I sign up for the SoCalGas Smart Therm program?
  1. Confirm your eligibility and interest for participating in the SoCalGas Smart Therm program with these three questions:
    • Are you a SoCalGas residential customer?
    • Do you use your eligible thermostat to control your natural gas furnace?
    • Will you allow SoCalGas to adjust your thermostat on days with high natural gas demand?
  2. If you confirm these three questions, please choose whether you have an existing internet-connected thermostat to enroll in the SoCalGas Smart Therm program or if you would like to purchase a new eligible thermostat.
  3. If you have an existing thermostat, please select your thermostat among the eligible models.
  4. If you do not have an existing eligible thermostat, please choose a model that is best for you, purchase it from your preferred retailer, install it in your home and register it with the manufacturer. Once you have installed and registered your new thermostat come back to enroll your thermostat in the SoCalGas Smart Therm program.
  5. Click the Enroll Now button to go to your thermostat’s enrollment site, where you will follow a series of simple steps to enroll.
  6. Once your eligibility is confirmed by SoCalGas, you will be enrolled in the program. You will receive notification on your eligibility status via email.
Question linkHow will I know that a Smart Therm event is in progress?

Depending on your thermostat provider, you will receive an email or notifications in your web or mobile application.

Question linkDuring a Smart Therm event, how will my thermostat be adjusted?
  • At the start of an event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted by a few degrees below the current temperature.
  • Each event will typically last no more than 4 hours and will occur between 5:00am-9:00am PT or 6:00pm-10:00pm PT. Adjustments typically will not occur on holidays.
  • Once the event is over, your thermostat will return to its normal set point and/or schedule.
  • You can opt out of the Smart Therm events at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat.
Question linkWill participating in the program negatively impact my comfort?

Smart Therm events will only affect the temperature by a few degrees, with minimal impact on comfort. There will never be more than 25 Smart Therm events per winter and each will last up to four hours.

Question linkAm I allowed to opt out of the Smart Therm events?

Yes. At any time during an event, you can opt out of the Smart Therm events at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat.

Question linkHow do I unenroll from the SoCalGas Smart Therm program?
  • Send an email to socalgas@energyhub.com requesting to end your participation in the SoCalGas Smart Therm program or you can contact SoCalGas at 1-888-431-2226.
  • Unenrolling from the program will end your participation for all your enrolled thermostats.
